11 Tips for Finding a Work at Home Job in 2011

1. Develop a good skill set. There are many free online courses you can take to improve basic computer skills. Libraries often offer free classes too. Or bite the bullet and take a formalized course. Whatever route you choose, good skills make the difference in those who get hired and those who don’t.

2. Have a solid resume showing your newly acquired skills right at the top. In today’s competitive job market, prospective employers want to know what you can bring to their organization. It’s all about relevant skills.

3. Set up a home office. Somewhere you can work free from distraction. Guaranteed some jobs come with more flexibility than others, but I still recommend a dedicated work from home space.

4. Be committed to finding a job. It’s a tough job market, but not impossible. If you are persistent you will find something.

5. Don’t be lured by the big money scams. Remember if it’s too good to be true, than it is.

6. Upgrade your work at home computer. I recently went from Vista to Windows 7, my oh my, what a difference. Prior to upgrading, I was considering purchasing anew desktop. No need, Windows 7 is smoother and the clogs and bogs are all gone.

7. Rehearse interviewing, develop a professional, yet friendly telephone voice.

8. Stay flexible. Working from home does not come without some commitment or sacrifice. You may have to get a land line phone. You may have to work a fixed schedule. You may have to work on Saturdays. You want a job don’t you? If you can make the job work, you have the skills to do so, take it even if it’s not perfect. What’s better working Saturdays or not working at all?

9. Prepare your family and loved ones for what’s in store. If you need quiet when you’re working, then your family needs to understand this. If the game rooms needs to be converted to a home office, then so be it. If you need to sacrifice cable for a landline phone, then do it. Once you’re working you can have both.

10. Keep applying.

11. Stay positive and upbeat. I know it’s difficult when bills are overdue or you are so stressed from working all day at your B and M job, but you must stay positive. Employers want happy employees, plain and simple. If you become discouraged or negative it will come through in your interviews. Stay positive; approach each interview with the mindset that this one is your perfect job. It will pay off down the road, when you realize that this job is in fact the one you’ve been looking for.
